Running Medical Dramas in RPGs

Most people know that I’m a huge fan of the television show House . I also know quite a few folks who would like to run “medical drama’-style roleplaying games, but run up against one major obstacle: lack of medical knowledge. Programs like House have consultants on staff to make sure that the information is accurate, but as a gamemaster or player you don’t have that sort of budget. I’m here to tell you that for a roleplaying game, the accuracy of the jargon doesn’t matter. As a viewer, I have Karl Vick of the Washington Post reports on the pernicious practice of insurance-policy “recission”–when insurers decide to cancel a policy on the grounds that they’ve been misled:“They said I never mentioned I had a back problem,” said Marrari, 52, whose coverage with Blue Cross was abruptly canceled in 2006 after a thyroid disorder, fluid in the heart and lupus were diagnosed. That left the Los Angeles woman with $25,000 in medical bills and the stigma of the company’s claim that she had commiAn evening of heavy drinking with conservative friends is always amusing. Inhibitions drop. All that inner self-censoring you use to moderate what you really think, to keep the peace and not come off as a complete asshole, just disappears. As they say, In vino veritas . Well, Pliny the Elder used to say that. It seems the Romans drank a lot. Of course that’s okay with friends. Outrageous things said by people you don’t know well can lead to fistfights, but when said by friends, more often …even though government assimilation of health care won’t stop health care bureaucrats from acting like scumbags. The story: The untimely disappearance of Sally Marrari’s medical coverage goes a long way toward explaining why insurance companies are cast as the villain in the health-care reform drama. “They said I never mentioned I had a back problem,” said Marrari, 52, whose coverage with Blue Cross was abruptly canceled in 2006 after a thyroid disorder, fluid in the heart and lupus w

USA When Your Insurer Says Youre No Longer Covered

. WASHINGTON / The Washington Post / September 8, 2009 By Karl Vick, Washington Post Staff Writer LOS ANGELES -- The untimely disappearance of Sally Marrari's medical coverage goes a long way toward explaining why insurance companies are cast as the villain in the health-care reform drama. "They said I never mentioned I had a back problem," said Marrari, 52, whose coverage with Blue Cross was abruptly canceled in 2006 after a thyroid disorder, fluid in the heart and lupus were diagnosed. If you’re not familiar with the word rescission, this is the practice of canceling policies because people didn’t reveal a preexisting condition. And it’s one of the key reasons why the health insurance companies can claim that there’s $100 billion in health care fraud every year. Here’s one example of what they consider fraud… “They said I never mentioned I had a back problem,” said Marrari, 52, whose coverage with Blue Cross was abruptly canceled in 2006 after a thyroid disorder,

First some background.  I was first directed to the Marshall protocol by a reader who wondered about the information the found on the web.  So I went to the web and looked at the available information, much as any patient would, and discussed what I found there . Dimensions of ICI and their Psychological Impact

Please read the posting before this one if you do not know what ICI is. 1. The Social Acceptability Factor Two women: one has endometriosis and the other has multiple sclerosis . Though each must rise to the challenge of coping with illness, the woman with endometriosis will probably receive less support, since she may feel less freedom to talk about her symptoms of extreme menstrual cramps and painful sex than the woman with MS who is having problems with her vision.
