Melbourne Writers Festival The City More China Miville and Overland

It’s like my festival is already over I’m broke and don’t have tickets to any more sessions despite me wanting to go to more next weekend. But these two days have been great. I’m sitting in a café now before heading off to a gig in Ferntree Gully, so thought I’d blog now. I went to the “Visions of the City” session chaired by Overland’s Rjurik Davidson with China Miéville, Margo Lanagan and Jack Dann. China was clearly the most interesting person speaking in the session and it was good to“If you are a man, Winston, you are the last man. Your kind is extinct; we are the inheritors. Do you understand that you are alone ? You are outside history, you are non-existent.”   George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four Dystopias have always had a fascination for readers and writers . They are, in their way, a perfect place for fiction. They are places where conflict, and thus a dramatic story, is inevitable. Even if, as inUP 239: Utopias and Dystopias in Thought and Practice. And, when looking over what titles we both wanted to read, we decided to go with a classic: The Giver by Lois Lowry. As Ana had not yet read this dystopian classic, she finally decided to take it on. And Thea, who has loved The Giver since meeting the author in middle school, thought this was a very fitting time to give the companion novel GatherSee the "General Bibliography" section below for both clickable on-line papers as well as references to publishers' websites

Militant Modernist Owen Hatherley

Interview by Andrew Stevens. 3:AM: Would you say there is an Owen Hatherley project? OH: Well I definitely wouldn’t call it that, but most of what I write does fit in with some sort of overarching project, yes, although the utility of that project is another matter… I write about the art forms that aren’t generally thought about seriously — about the politics of urban space, architecture, pop music, popular culture — in all of these cases because the level of criticism is usually so Systems Biology is changing the way biology is done. Is it a fad or is it effective? This blog tracks current happenings and helps you stay on top of the field.

Bethany Brings us Top Five AllFemale UtopiasDystopias

5. The Female Man : A science fiction classic by Joanna Russ, this was an early example of feminist ideals used in the writing of science fiction. It features 4 versions of the same woman, each living in a different possible reality. One is like ours, one has a literal war of the sexes, one is like ours but the Great Depression never ended, and one is female only, as all of the men have died off from a disease. Top Five AllMale UtopiasDystopias

E-Verse staff writer Bethany writes: Science fiction is littered with literature imagining all-female societies. But there are very few imaginings of worlds or societies that are male-only. Is there some reason why women can imagine worlds where men are neither needed nor wanted, but men have a hard time imagining the reverse? 5. TSS June A utopia that dont suck

So finished reading all the available Sookie Stackhouse books. Wow! I haven’t enjoyed reading a series so much since, like…the Dresden Files a few years ago! Unfortunately by reading them all at once they’ve started to blend in my mind and so my reviews are going to be one long post instead of eight little ones. Um. Anyway, I got Drood and The Hunger Games out from my library last Wednesday, but I haven’t started either of them. Matt Jones at Webstock 09 on  The Demon-Haunted World : Since the 60s we’ve imagined the combination of computers and our environment would create both utopias and dystopias. Since the 80’s we’ve seen academics, artists and corporate R&D; labs prototype these futures from the top-down. Now, hackers are building sensors, bots and software into everything around them bottom-up, fast, cheap and out-of-control. The Original Technocrats

Alexis Madrigal points to an article by John G. Gunnell about the history of technocracy : The term "technocracy," though originated in the United States in 1919 by an engineer named William Smith, first became common when it was adopted by a movement that developed in the early 1930s as a response to the Great Depression. That movement, which for a time gained considerable notoriety and a substantial following, began with a group of technicians and engineers dedicated t
