Mac OSX Snow Leopard Review

Ask any Mac owner and they’ll likely tell you the Apple allure is a game of two halves: the reassuring hardware and the slick, consistent OS. Apple is finally delivering their latest version of OS X, v10.6 Snow Leopard, adding a new coat of polish to the company’s software prowess. SlashGear has been testing out Snow Leopard over the past few weeks, and we’ve found that perhaps its most satisfying aspect is that it upgrades things both visibly and less obviously, rather than one or the other. How font handling in PDF works - a guide to embedding and subsetting typefaces plus Acrobat settings & output

Web fonts where are we

Untangling the tangle With all the talk about web fonts, I think it’s time I tried to outline the present situation. I’ve not attempted to do so before, owing to the complexity of some of the material, and the speed at which things are moving. Web designers are generally not interested in technical specifications, TrueType Hinting instructions, and extended OpenType permissions tables. They have one pressing question: when can I use font x in my web pages? Today, in Atlanta, Georgia, at T Footnote/Endnote.To insert an automatically numbering footnote, just leave the defaults as is. Click OK.You'll see the number in the text, and a number at the bottom of the page.Type t

Web Nerd Terminology Explained

As happens with any weird niche societal group, us web nerds have developed some language of our own. Some of this language is perfectly acceptable English, but still sounds weird to an outsider. I thought I’d throw together a list of these words and attempt to explain them in plain English as a reference for non-nerds. Browser – A browser is a software application that is used to visit websites. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc. If you think this is obvious, think again . SMaking your site as user friendly and easy to navigate as possible is every developers goal and implementing autosuggest is one way to help achieve it. Not only is it helpful to the user but is also somewhat expected now that most of the top sites have already built this functionality into their own sites. This collection includes standard auto suggest scripts, del.icious tag suggestion, autosuggest control to search images on Flickr, and advanced table filter with auto suggest control. 01. A

Flash vs Silverlight What Suits Your Needs Best

With the release of Silverlight 1.0 and its subsequent versions, a debate started among designers and developers regarding choosing between Flash and Silverlight. Silverlight faces difficulties in capturing the market because of the maturity of Flash. However, Silverlight has managed to keep up by including certain features that designers and developers have always wanted to see in Flash, such as search engine optimization. In this article, we will discuss some of the technical differences betwYou can make your PDF files smaller by subsetting your fonts, but should you? There is some big news this week for those website owners and designers keen to use custom fonts on their websites. For the longest time web designers have been limited to a small subset of fonts that were known to be present on the majority of users PCs. Although CSS font stacks allowed designers to choose less common fonts, because they could specify a safe alternative if that font was Hands up if you’ve been in this situation: you have to give a presentation using PowerPoint, and you’re pretty sure it’s going to suck. Maybe you don’t know how to put an effective one together. Maybe you do, but you don’t have enough time to put a good presentation together. Maybe your boss has handed you the presentation and said, “Show this,” or you’re collaborating with someone who’s not down with anything other than slide after slide of bullet points. Sure, there’s some info out there. D

How to make freemium pay

At the heart of a ‘freemium’ business model is a notion that makes me viscerally uncomfortable: giving something away for nothing. Services are given away free in the expectation of being able to sell paid-for, premium services to a subset of customers later on. In essence, the free subscriptions are a marketing cost that is recouped once the premium services start to take off. Fair enough, but in the heady atmosphere of recent years, some people have driven this model to extremes. Twitter and FThe economic situation is eating into your profits, and the Microsoft Office licenses look more expensive than before. Or maybe you are familiar with the way Microsoft Office has looked for over a decade: it had a file menu, edit menu, and format menu, and you balk at the thought of retraining your staff for Microsoft Office 2007’s bizarre ribbon. In either case, you don’t have to buy Microsoft Office thanks to OpenOffice.org: the best kept secret in office suites. OpenOffice.org is a free offFor creative graphic designers, fonts on the web have always been be a bone of contention. Essentially typography on the web has been limited to a small subset of fonts that exist on the three major platforms - and thus creative use of these has come from changing css properties such as letter spacing, or font-weight. If you wanted to use a particular font within a web document, you have two choices. Embed it in an image (assuming its a small part

A gentle introduction to video encoding part captioning

The first thing you need to know about captions and subtitles is that captions and subtitles are different . The second thing you need to know about captions and subtitles is that you can safely ignore the differences unless you’re creating your own from scratch. I’m going to use the terms interchangeably throughout this article, which will probably drive you crazy if you happen to know and care about the difference. Adobe Web fonts and EOT

Adobe is strongly supportive of the effort to make Microsoft’s EOT web font format an open standard. Indeed, Adobe pays for Steve Zilles’ time, and he will be chairing the EOT standardization effort, should the W3C accept the proposal in principle. We will be updating our licensing FAQ to make it clear that our existing font license terms allow EOT usage, and do not allow linking to original fonts placed on web servers. Why do we support EOT? Our surveys of web designers and font developers h

Character set terms defined

Over on Typophile , Nick Shinn asked: "What is the difference between a code page, a glyph list, and a Unicode chart?" Nick also made some mentions of "encoding" in the same thread, so I thought I would define the whole lot of them. I expect this will be useful to font developers, and perhaps some other folks as well. I've just dashed this off, so I reserve the right to twiddle the descriptions for more accuracy and/or clarity. Especially if my r

John Gruber: One regard in which the iPhone’s OS X is clearly just a shallow subset of Mac OS X is in the set of fonts that come installed with the system. As a future doctor in the US, this whole Obamaplan is super scary. I seriously hope the controversy over whether to cover abortion will kill this awful plan.

A fumbled half court shot with .2 seconds left loses to a rushed 3 point shot with a whole second left? That's obvious bias for the "king" who got his first game winner after being in the league for 6 years.
