Fighting the Frost

For those who found my last story a bit difficult to take, well, this one is at least somewhat less hard on the reader. Or at least it's intended to be. Fighting the Frost Raelorn stood on the edge of the city and shivered. He didn't know which city it was, nor did he care. They were all the same. Cold, indifferent steel and concrete, air thick with dirt and noise. He was ready to stop. He'd been searching too long, and he was weary. Too, cities were not known for being gentle to his kind. The evening was bashful. The sun folded over the sulking Mexican valley. The Holy Ghost, or some tranquil breeze, shuffles the desert trees and stretches shadows over the walking sands. A lone road unwinds the palm of its hand through the warped mountains. The pavement is bankrupted and neglected.  Not a soul to wander or a mind to wonder. In fear of weaning off the silence, even for hunger, the morning birds catch their worms without singing their morning songs. I wouldn’t dare ask questions

MUSIC UP CLOSE WITH JANIE SEPTEMBER

After our initial open house, where you saw the contents of our little virtual music club here at Music Up Close, we will be highlighting different rooms each month, but always ending with our cocktail meet-and-greet at the SonicBids Lounge. For September, Club Ladies brings a look a Teisha Helgerson, the frontwoman for the band Amelia. Her early exposure to music has been keeping her spirits high, even when facing some difficult life events. The onset of dusk seemed rapid, more so than in Cape Town. They were traversing a plain. Open and flat, its boundaries dwindling into the murky middle distance, without feature except in the west, where the last pallor in the sky provided a backdrop to the occasional silhouette - a weirdly shaped hillock, a low jagged ridge like some rough beast sloucMister Sister occupied an old, abandoned seaside resort beside a wild stretch of coastland, a rundown property he had added to and developed over the years. Rows of ornamental palms had gone completely wild, ballooning between tangled mango trees like the heads of distraught women. A white walled, tinted window comfort zone had been erected on a cliff facing the sea. At one time this complex must have been chic and breezy, with its spacious atriums, glassy balcony’s and rambling kidney-shaped te

Crossposted from The Wild Wild Left with highly offensive tea bagger language intact- reader beware. All images found and used below from google are courtesy of electablog, from his awesome blog of the same name's post, "The Tea Party Express ORGY OF ANGER" We parked at Mexican Jones, a small and empty restaurant I worked for at one time, when it was thriving. In the very back of the lot, there was a neglected trellis that lead to the almost invisible path that follows the water

Cory Doctorows Makers Part of

Illustration by Idiots’Books As it turned out, his prison infirmary time didn’t last long at all. Kettlewell had faded fast from the riot, headed back to the guesthouse and got the lawyers on the phone. He’d shown them the stream off of Perry’s phone and they were in front of a judge before Perry reached the jail. Perry was led out of the infirmary with his arm in a sling. His face was still painfully swollen, and he’d managed to turn an ankle as well. At least his hearing was coming backWe rejoin the story as the three touring cyclists are devising a plan for what to do about the massive wind.... Stopped alongside the road, with the roaring wind in our ears, we tried to come up with ideas for what to do to carry on. Running nose to tail wasn't giving any relief. La Route Du Rock St Malo France thth August

Peaches // Photography: Leah Pritchard It somewhat defeats the point of setting a festival in St Malo, a tall, beautiful walled town in northern France, when the first acts of Friday afternoon play in what feels like a sterile Milton Keynes conference centre. He painfully surveyed her beauty from a distance as he waited for her response. Neither of them was distracted by the rain drops that were falling on the roof of the old barn that held so many of their precious memories. Eliza looked at him, no longer with the eyes of adoration that once held Tom in high regard. Instead, they carried the weight of years of pai

Belated Outer Alliance Pride Day

September 1st was Outer Alliance Pride Day, and Cheryl Morgan has a round-up of some of the posts associated with the day , with some context about the John C. Wright post that sparked the idea–and there’s the posts linkage on the Outer Alliance site itself . I’m not normally a joiner–I don’t actually belong to any organizations, as far as I’m aware–but this one seems like a no-brainer. So here’s the pledge: “As a member of the Outer Alliance, I advocate for queer speculative fiction and thOn January 22, as one of his first official acts as president, Barack Obama signed an executive order mandating the closing of the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay within one year.
