Black Pepper and Honey Strawberry Shortcakes

There are ideas which slither their way in through my ear and then bang around in an empty skull for the next 10 years.  I get fixated on a thought, taste or action which either grows into an addiction or lies fallow and degrading in my garden of abandoned thoughts. Eventually, when it’s been so long since I last thought about it that I’ve almost forgotten how it started, I’ll scratch my head and consider my “new” idea, which was actually a bastardized recollection.  Oh, the vagaries of my que

Zopf or Swiss Sunday Bread

Chouette22 posted a couple of weeks ago pictures of her Zopf . In a reply to my post she mentioned that eggs in this bead would make it dryer or stale faster. This motivated me to experiment with my recipe, with the goal to have at the end a fully understood, easy to use and "Americanized" recipe. To have a solid and accepted expert on my side I used Dan DiMuzio's book, "Bread Baking" to support my testiMonday Sep 21, 2009 – By Nicole Mitsch It’s that time of year again. A chap knocked on the door and delivered an enormous wicker hamper, stuffed with every possible seasonal vegetable you can imagine. I was in the garden, and was, frankly, slightly confused when #2 came out to find me and declare that ’some bloke just dropped off a big box of broccoli and stuff’. Anyhoo, it turned out not to be an anonymous food parcel from the locals, (bless ‘em, they’ve had to stand by, helpless, whilst witnessing my shambolic attem

Fire Roasted Red Peppers

I’ve been reading all kinds of books about canning . While reading through, Well-Preserved: Recipes and Techniques for Putting Up Small Batches of Seasonal Foods I found a recipe for roasted red peppers. Instead of roasting the peppers in the oven, I decided to roast them over a fire out back. There’s just something wonderful about roasting peppers and tomatoes over a fire. It gives them a wonderful smoky flavor that you

Learning to the Love the Italian Prune Plum

Becca Dilley / Heavy Table There are only a few weeks every year when the little purple fruits known as Italian prune plums pop up in local supermarkets. Karina sent me her Candy Apple scented soap to try and I love it! It smells absolutely delicious and when I am done with my shower, my entire bathroom smells like candy apples! Her soap bars are made with natural ingredients such as coconut and palm oil, safflower oil, glycerin and shea butter. The lather is so generous that you can shave with it! Not only that, but after using it for one week, From Recipes I'm always experimenting with new ideas when it comes to tomato-based pasta sauce, a seemingly inexhaustible genre of cooking. When summer is at its peak, I love to make this no-cook marinated sauce , basically a bruschetta topping tossed with noodles instead of spooned onto bread. Then I turn to canned tomatoes when summer is over, trying new ideas like a roasted fennel sauce or adding a pinch of saffron . Now is a time when fre
