Punctuation without fear

Today is National Punctuation Day , one of those gimmicky holidays on which one can be jocular or sober or both. Last year I posted a sentence that incorporated the standard punctuation marks. This year, some practical advice. Nowadays, the terms ‘word formation’ does not have a clear cut, universally accepted usage. It is sometimes referred to all processes connected with changing the form of the word by, for example, affixation, which is a matter of morphology. In its wider sense word formation denotes the processes of creation of new lexical units. Although it seems that the difference between morphological change of a word and creation of a new term is quite easy to perceive, there is sometimes a dispute as to Relative phrases in sentences can be substituted for by adjectives, participles and nouns to make the sentence even more sensible. Relative clauses are words used to give additional information about a sentence without beginning another sentence. A relative clause is used to avoid repetition of words and making the text more fluent. Some examples of relative pronouns in sentences are: Who – She told us about the weird man who lives there. Which – Do you recognize which tool he told us to

When not only precedes but also see that each is followed by the same part of speech

For a sentence to be grammatically correct it has to have ‘not only’ and ‘but also’ used correctly. Every time that ‘not only’ is used in the beginning of the sentence it has to be followed by ‘but also’. ‘Not only’ and ‘but also’ are known as conjunctions, but to be more specific, a paired conjunction like this is known as a correlative conjunction. “Not only…but also” is used to link clauses, phrases and words. The other types of correlative conjunctions include the following: • Whether…or As with any other language, in English the structure and state of words in any collection of English sentences and phrases is very important. When constructing sentences great care should be given to the structure and the state of words. Most people say that they cannot write but the fundamentals of English that one need to be aware of are very simple and to be proficient in the language one only needs to be aware of these pillars of the language and their usage especially in the sentences. When we are little kids we perceive the world around differently than older people do. This is mainly because we see everything as a sort of learning experience. There’re loads of various things around and we want to know all of them. Shortly after we can read, write, listen and speak grammatical sentences using relative clauses, noun phrases, verbs and adverbs without even knowing what they are but instinctively knowing if there usage is correct or not. All seems so simple being language is

Draft AntiGay Bill Circulating In Uganda

Uganda appears to be inching closer to “strengthening” its already draconian anti-gay laws which already provide for a possible life sentence for those convicted of homosexuality. A draft of the proposed bill obtained by Box Turtle Bulletin indicates that Ugandan lawmakers intend to go much further. In a draft dated April 20, 2009 and being circulated surreptitiously, the proposed bill creates an offense of “aggravated homosexuality” and provides for the death penalty under specific circumstanConjunctions are used in speech to show some likeness or comparison between words. They are applied to link phrases, words and complete sentences. Through the use of conjunctions writers are able to connect clauses into more complicated phrases and sentences. This enables the creation of more clearer and better sentences. There are several different types of conjunctions, some are just made up of one word e.g. and, nor, or, yet, for, so. Some others are phrases e.g. “but also/not only”, and “so

Jerry Weissman Obamas Health Care Speech

In his weekly Ne w York Times column yesterday, Frank Rich called Barack Obama's health care speech to a joint session of Congress last Wednesday, "inspired, lucid and, in the literally and figuratively Kennedyesque finale, moving." Mr. Rich was referring to two Kennedys, Ted and John; the latter was the figurative reference and the former the literal. Obama quoted directly from a letter Ted had written to him just before he died: He expressed confidence that this would b

Adverbs should be placed next to the words they are intended to qualify

Image by the_munificent_sasquatch via Flickr An adverb can simply be defined as a word that modifies an adjective or a verb. Most of the adverbs describe actions as well as give additional information on the how, where, what and where. To explain how something is happening or happened. The use of adverbs correctly improves a sentence. When using the adverbs you need to be very carefully especially with the words placed next to them. How does Brooke sing? She sings wonderfully. This typeThe French noun un champ literally refers to a field. It is also used in a number of idiomatic expressions, noun clauses, and prepositional phrases. Learn how to say the coast is clear, at every opportunity, to run away, and more with this list of expressions with champ . More French expressions"Meet your new government health care plan." No matter what they say publicly, the Democrats and the White House know full well that the majority of the public want no part of government health care. Obama is floundering and trying to use his oratorical skills to convince us that its a good deal. One press conference and three stacked town halls, and he still can't articulate why we should accept this monster. Now he is thinking about addressing a joint session of Congress to pitch health careThis is the second part of a two-part “learn about” series on memory improvement. The first part covers sleep, physical exercise, and stress management. In this part, I take a look at diet and memory techniques. Diet As suggested in Part I of this series , habits that keep your body functioning well tend also to help your mind – and by extension, your memory. Diet is no exception. As with so many things related to diet, there is plenty of blather out there about what works and what doesEmphatic words must stand in emphatic positions; i.e., for the most part, at the beginning or the end of the sentence. This rule alters the traditional order of positioning the emphatic word or phrases in a sentence, according to what has over the years come to be accepted as the common rule concerning the placing of the adverb in connection with the subject and the verb. Therefore the new order dictates that the adverb should be sandwiched between the subject in the sentence and the verb. A goI'm teaching a class on pacing, and got to sentences, and had some thoughts on how to make sentences serve your pacing: The English language is dependent for meaning on sentence order. If I have an ungrammatical messed-case sentence like: Me and him went to the store. You know what that means, even if "me and him" are actually the objective case—they are in the subject position , so you don't have a mo

LotR reread Two Towers III The Voice of Saruman

This week in the Lord of the Rings re-read, chapter III.10 of The Two Towers , “The Voice of Saruman.” As always, spoilers for the whole book and comments after the jump. What Happens All the non-Ent visitors to Isengard meet and go to Orthanc, where Gandalf, Théoden, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas climb the stairs, and the rest wait at the foot. Gandalf commands Saruman to come forth, and he does. First he offers Théoden peace, friendship, and protection against the Someone asked if we're as skeptical of trailing participial phrases as leading ones . Good question. The main answer is-- I'm skeptical of almost any modifier before the main clause. That doesn't mean I think they're all bad, because they're not-- often we need some essential bit of information to get the full impact of the sentence. Additionally , a transition Another point beiSharon Wildwind . . . doesn’t kill us will drive us crazy. The relative pronouns “that” and “which” have been driving me crazy for a while. Since it’s September and we’re all back in school, one way or another, I decided to brush up on that tiny bit of grammar. Brushing up wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Apparently, rules have been in flux for a while. Books printed at different times give different advice. But you still have to understand restrictive and non-restrictive clauses. Her
