The Emerging Church In Retrospect

Calvins Worst Heresy and Does it Relate to Von Balthasar

Over at the Called to Communion site I wrote a controversial post about "Calvin's Worst Heresy: That Christ Suffered in Hell." Most Catholic readers might assume that Calvin's worst "heresy" boils down to his doctrine of "double predestination" . I, however, put my finger on a passage from Calvin's Institutes where Calvin indicates that the cross oKey Phrase page for penal substitutionary atonement: Books containing the phrase penal substitutionary atonementfrom green & baker's third paragraph against charles hodge's presentation of penal substitutionary atonement: rather than presenting a father and son who are one, hodge has one member of the trinity punishing another member of the ...The view of Christ’s death presented here has frequently been called the theory of “penal substitution.” Christ’s death was “penal” in that he bore a penalty when he ...green & baker's second paragraph against charles hodge's presentation of penal substitutionary atonement: because hodge read the bible through the lens of the criminal justice system of his era, the bible appeared to support his ...

In Defense of PenalSubstitutionary Atonement

1 In Defense of Penal-Substitutionary Atonement Samuel A. Dawson, Ph.D. Professor of Theology Detroit Baptist Theological Seminary I. Introduction II.Rejections and revisions of the great doctrines of the person of Christ, the penal substitutionary work of Christ, and the justification of sinners by grace alone through faith alone ought to be examined not only on their own terms but also in relation to the doctrine of sin. It is possible to so minimise and pare down the doctrine of sin, in relation to its effects on human nature and its just condemnation by a holy God, that really there is no need, or desire, or reason to suppose that Christ

Dying with Jesus

How do you think of judgement and salvation? If you ask me – you shouldn’t think like this:   Instead think like this:   Or to be a bit more nuanced – like this . Now I could take this observation in many directions. Perhaps we could explore its significance for an infra versus supra-lapsarian debate. Perhaps we could discuss the strong link that some make between penal substitutionary atonement and limited atonement. We could think about how to preach warnings of judgement The doctrine of penal substitutionary atonement is the teaching that the Lord Jesus Christ died in our place to pay the penalty of our sin and bring us into a right relationship to God. J.I. Packer describes this doctrine as follows: ...

The Center

In postmodern philosophy there is no stable center as the center keeps changing. Postmodern Christians tend to not obey this as they do have a center--social justice. What should be the center is the substitutionary atonement , and THEN social justice flows outward from that. But when you rarely or never talk about the cross and what Jesus accomplished there in relation to bearing our sin, any social gospel will soon fall apart. BRIAN MCLAREN AND EVANGELICAL PANENTHEISM

To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. “Star Trek” Quantum Spirituality Of An Alleged New Light As a pastor-teacher, in addition to laboring in online apologetics and discernment, I no doubt cover these issues a bit differently than some others would, which we pray will help Apprising Ministries  be of some value. This particular series concerns a disturbing aspect in the theology of Brian McLarWe don’t need better preaching, we need a better gospel. Yes I’m being provocative and hyperbolous.  Let me remind you that this is a blog. What I mean is this: there’s a lot of focus on becoming better preachers.  The real need is to preach a better gospel.  These thoughts were prompted by a Spurgeon comment as quoted by CJ Mahaney at T4G 2008: “Whitefield and Wesley might preach the gospel better but they cannot preach a better gospel.” Spurgeon’s point is that the power is in the Apprising Ministries  moves forward discussing an ongoing shift, drift would be the more applicable word, in the theology of the egregiously ecumenical Emerging Church  aka Emergent Church —currently morphing into  Emergence Christianity — toward panentheism with a flawed theosis as its logical conclusion; particularly evident with Brian McLaren . Finding God in the Shack Seeking Truth in a Story of Evil and Redemption

Finding God in the Shack Seeking Truth in a Story of Evil and Redemption The Shack has touched millions of readers with its portrayal of a compassionate God in the face of great evil. Many have identified with the main character’s Great Sadness, the terrible burden of grief that often accompanies and follows a deep loss, for the Great Sadness is part of the human condition. And it compels us to ask, Where is God? Who is God? Roger Olson, who has faced The Fulcrum blog was, until a little while ago, carrying links to Adam Rutherford’s Guardian ‘Comment is Free’ diary of doing an Alpha Course — not least, I’m sure, because he was doing it at St Mary’s Islington, until recently home of the now Bishop of Sherborne, Graham Kings. I’m not sure the latest updates have been linked, but the diary is well worth reading, not least to see how a Guardianista approaches the faith. One thing that seems clear to me is that Rutherford has a fixed view t

EMERGENCE CHRISTIANITY AND PANENTHEISM

In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands.  They will perish, but You remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing You will change them and they will be discarded. But You remain the same, and Your years will never end. Mysticism Leads To The So-Called “God” Within As with the previous Apprising Ministries article Emergence Christianity: Quantum Shift To Panentheism the main purpose here is toGreat High Priest, we view Thee stooping, With our names upon Thy breast, In the garden groaning, drooping, To the ground with horrors pressed. Holy angels stood confounded, To behold their Maker thus, And shall we remain unmoved, When we know ’twas all for us? Joseph Hart The message of the cross is intended to make a deeper impact upon us than a mere acceptance of its truthfulness. The message of Christ crucified is to engage the mind, and to be received asApprising Minstries continues a look at how  the doctrine of the nature of God is changing in the Emerging Church, which offers an explanation as to why the penal substitutionary atonement is unnecessary to this new Emergence.
