Wind Watch Planners at two councils urging refusal of Peak wind

Planning officers at two district councils have recommended that a controversial application for a wind farm on the edge of the Peak District should not be given the go-ahead. Already, almost 1500 individuals and numerous organisations have submitted representations to North East Derbyshire and Derbyshire Dales district councils regarding the application for five 126m-tall wind turbines on Matlock Moor. And now planning officials on both authorities have advised ...The old castle on top that protected the town from invading Moors - not always successfully - was knocked down by the French in 1706 during the War of Spanish Succession. National Park Authority urges refusal for major wind farm

Better renewable energy solutions should be pursued for sensitive landscapes than wind farms, said the Peak District National Park Authority as it urged refusal of a major wind farm within 1.5 miles of its boundary. The Development of Education in Africa

EDUCATION in Africa has a history reaching back many centuries. Certainly the achievements of the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Ethiopia are well known. Then, early in the first millennium of the Common Era, the Moors and other peoples on the northern fringe of Africa made notable contributions to world education and culture. And during the past 1,000 years the Saharan and sub-Saharan peoples had several centers of learning—Timbuktu, Agadez, Gao, Katsina and Borno, where books written in Arfiled in Travel on Jul.30, 2009By Francesca HoylesPublished: 2:58PM BST 24 Jul 2009Previous of  ImagesNextSutton Bank on the edge of the North York Moors: National Parks Week is about to take place across the countryA classical music festival will be taking place with the beautiful backdrop of the Lake DistrictAn image taken from the new book, Creative Bird Photography Events for July 27 to August 2 Related ArticlesThe art of bird photographyMore on festivals and eventsSummer

Ive been reading Gods Own Country by Ross Raisin

I SHOULD have hated Ross Raisin's debut novel, because I'm a Lancastrian. It's not that Lancastrians have any kind of problem with books - there are libraries in most of the towns now, don't you know, even those with dark, satanic mills - and we even know some quite big words. It's just that Raisin's story is set in that other northern English county tha knows, where they talk reet funny; it's the county we Lancastrians were at war with for most of the 15th century.Oh, alright, it's Yorkshire - thA public inquiry into two proposed wind farm developments near South Molton has been adjourned until the autumn. The inquiry, which started last month, relates to a proposal for nine wind turbines submitted to North Devon Council at Three Moors in Knowstone, and to a second proposal for four wind turbines at Bickham Moor in Oakford, submitted to Mid Devon District Council. It follows appeals lodged by applicants Airtricity and Coronation Power. Planning inspector, Philip Major has deferred the i

Heavy Fighting in the Philippines Another Forgotten War

06 June 2009 Filed From Chaghcharan, Afghanistan Overview Until recently, Afghanistan was called “The Forgotten War.” The dramatic domestic, regional, and international politics of the Iraq war largely eclipsed the fact that our people were fighting just as hard in Afghanistan. Although we’re paying attention to AfPak now, off the radar screen an important and related fight has been unfolding in the Philippines. This wind farm is not situated out to sea but in the picturesque hills of the Saddleworth Moors and would be visible for miles around. Government targets state that 10% of the UK’s energy should be supplied by renewable resources by 2010 and developments like the Saddleworth Moor turbines would contribute towards that total. Leading environmentalists from across the country have previously
