Forum roleplay is exactly what it name replies: forum-based roleplay.  The general format is considered play-by-post and the plots usually consist of 2-4 characters, although more or less are acceptable.  This form of roleplay falls somewhere between email and chat in regard to speed and ease of use, although the quality of RP in forums in arguably better than both chat and email RPs.
