Despite the siren call our our increasingly multimedia, multitasking society, humans seem to behave like old computers with a single-core processor, rather than the latest PCs with multiprocessing. This is not literally true – our brains are massively parallel, and they can process multiple kinds of information simultaneously. This is why I wrote above about human behavior and not brain processing. To clarify the distinction – our brains can parallel process, but we can only pay attention to oInattentional Blindness is a very real phenomenon discovered by psychologists Arien Mack, PhD, of the New School for Social Research, and the late Irvin Rock, PhD, of the University of California, Berkeley. People DO want options so they can indulge their individuality but then 90% or more of the irrelevant options fade away, becoming “out of sight, out of mind”. The most dramatic example of what cognitive psychologists call “inattentional blindness” is the gorilla v

Chapter Six of my book in draft is available here . As with the other chapters, I've tried to make it comprehensible without having read the previous chapters. When attention goes badly wrong it can play some nasty tricks on us. Imagine if every time you walked into a room with a neatly turned down bed, you automatically took off your clothes and got into it — even though it wasn’t bedtime, wasn’t your bed, and wasn’t even your home. This might sound fanciful but it’s a documented behaviour of patients with attentional problems caused by brain damage . Many everyday occurrences can also be explained by attentional errors, like Neuroscience has long had a fascination with magic as a way of looking at how the mind operates. Until recently, I hadn't cared to much for this area of research. But leave it to Penn and Teller to change all that, which they did with a recent article in Wired . It was a great article that made me appreciate the neuroscience of magic in a new way. This article from a couple of months back in Scientific American Mind is also quite good. What Can Magicians Teach Us about the Brain? Laura Sanders recently wrote an interesting article, titled “ SPECIALIS REVELIO! It’s not magic, it’s neuroscience ,” in ScienceNews . Here are some excerpts. * * * Skill in manipulating people’s perceptions has earned magicians a new group of spellbound fans: Scientists seeking to learn how the eyes and brain perceive — or don’t perceive — reality. “The interest for magic has been there for a long time,” says Gustav Kuhn , a neuroscientist at Durham University in England and former

Following the passes in the game and counting only some of them is a difficult task. There are two balls and six players, everyone’s moving around, and the balls are often obscured. It’s all your brain can do to keep up. Actually, there’s a little too much to keep up with. The bottleneck is in visual short-term memory, where the results of visual processing have to be stashed while the actual analysislooking for passes by players in white shirtshappens. O body swayed to music, O brightening glance, How can we know the dancer from the dance? —W.B. Yeats, “Among School Children”“So, how is it that you managed to be on the roadway that night?” The question was posed by a reporter from the Dallas Morning News. This was in 1988, during an interview about my recently released film, “The Thin Blue Line.” I had decided for the first time as a documentary filmmaker to use slow-motion re-enactments in my account of the wrongful conviction of Rand(Last week, I wrote about re-enactments and the intentions behind their use. Why re-enact the past? Different kinds of re-enactments were discussed: re-enactments that purport to be real and re-enactments that re-focus our attention on specific details, in some instances details that have been overlooked or misunderstood. That essay also suggested that the real problem might be the brain: how we look at and perceive images. This essay continues where I left off and takes it a bit further. — E
