– This is a difficult post to write, particularly because the ideas it addresses are just plain large. And as large ideas have such permeating ramifications, both towards Spinoza philosophy and contemporary Science it is indeed very difficult to do any justice to them. Nick Smyth has posted an article at 3 Quarks Daily , entitled "Science, Pseudoscience and Bollocks," that John Wilkins calls "infuriating but thought-provoking." I confess that I find it mostly confusing. Smyth wants to replace any talk about a demarcation between science and non-science/pseudoscience with a demarcation between "truth" and "bollocks." According to Smyth, the current way of opposing creationism is deficient. any of us will continue to oppose religious/mystical/creatiIn the recent homage to the late Patrick Swayze I watched, with my aspiring young dancer, yet another replay of Dirty Dancing . I was reminded of the misunderstanding of most of those who are derisive of Rand’s work when the ultimate antagonist of the plot proclaims the right to leave a woman he has impregnated by tossing out a copy of The Fountainhead saying something to the effect that “little people don’t matter.” Unfortunately, this is the common perception of Rand. And it is made of iAlternative energy is basically defined as the energy source that does not reduce the natural resources and damage the environment. Sat 19 Sep, 2009Comments Filed under: Evidences Geoff left a comment yesterday pointing us to what he called “a simple presentation explaining why all of these arguments are ultimately unconvincing to most atheists.” The video, “Putting faith in its place,” represents itself as a kind of ultimate answer to all theistic arguments. It’s an example of the kind of thing that both perplexes and grieves me.Overview of the VideoIt begins with a logical presentation of what we can or cannot know aStephenB, at 50 , won, for the appended comment in response to the question: Is accidental origin of life a doctrine that holds back science? The prize? A free copy of Steven Meyer’s Signature in the Cell . The accidental origin of life idea hurts science because it militates against the vital principle of causation, the rational and indispensible standard on which science is based. The first

Much ink has been spilled in the skeptical community over the issue of labels. What should we call ourselves: atheists, or agnostics? Which term is more “justified”? Here, I toss my own hat into the ring on this question… and then I will argue that this issue is unimportant, distracting, and, potentially, divisive. There is at least a small upside to this issue, which is why I’m including my own reasoning. The only potentially serious function it has, in my view, is that it provides a convAt least from the Christian position, tracing the boundaries of philosophy and theology has proven to be quite difficult. This is due in part to the fact that classic theological loci have so much to say about philosophy’s subject matter. Cornelius Van Til once remarked that if one’s philosophy was Calvinistic, then it isn’t philosophy anymore – it is theology. Herein lies the difficulty. If the philosopher consciously presupposes the Triune God of the Bible in his system and presents Him asThat pleasure can precede understanding in matters of art ought to be a truism, though judging by much of what passes for criticism it is not. I enjoy the work of Wallace Stevens despite finding some of his poems obstinately opaque after more than 40 years of acquaintance. One way to define a bad poem is that it yields neither pleasure nor understanding, even with time. David Ferry has a new poem, “Street Scene,” in the fall issue of The Threepenny Review . Typically for him, it i

If there’s one thing that gets my goat , it’s when I have my atheism conflated with anti-theism. What’s the problem? you may ask. Sam Harris is fond of pointing out that “atheist” is a term that shouldn’t even exist. We are most of us atheists in one way or another – find me a Christian who isn’t atheistic towards Odin or Zeus. That “atheists” should be tagged and singled out for being atheistic is a bit rich – we just go one god further. Of course,Mon 31 Aug, 2009Comments Filed under: Intellectual Engagement, Postmodernism/ Relativism, Thinking Christianly Reposted from February 27, 2006In a world of religious and ideological divisions, there’s hardly any phrase that evokes more anger than “I know the truth.” It’s tolerated in mathematics and science, though even scientists are wary of it, knowing how often the “truths” of one age are later corrected or replaced. In morality and religion, though, it’s downright offensive. Relativi

Oh this story is so easy to critique . The summary is this: NYU Law, my alma mater, invited National University of Singapore professor Dr. Li-ann Thio to teach as a visiting professor. Dr. Thio is slated to teach “Human Rights in Asia,” and is certainly an accomplished academic and politician. However, Dr. Thio also has some, uh, questionable views on homosexuality and gay rights — she compared anal sex to “shoving a straw up your nose to drink,” for example, and in a speech supporting thMon 20 Jul, 2009Comments Filed under: Origins and Science Does faith make sense in an age of science? Introduction The following article by Raúl Prada Alcoreza was originally published in the first issue of Crítica y Emancipación , a biannual Latin American journal of the social sciences. This translation from the Spanish, by Shana Yael Shubs and Ruth Felder, was published this year in a complete English-language version of the journal’s first issue. It was distributed at the recent congress of the Latin American Studies Association, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in June. A revieProtagoras said: man is the measure of all things. But we must keep in mind, it is only on an objective metaphysical and epistemological basis that you'll get egoism right. Probably, most of our readers are aware of an innovation that had arisen in the Diocese of Sydney before the end of the last century. That innovation is called "Lay Administration," which means Lay Celebration of the Eucharist. It has never seemed necessary from my home in America to spend much time and effort combating the Sydney innovation, because until recently it has been unthinkable that it might spread I was wondering if you might say more on how there comes about “really great stuff that is both realist and constructivist.” I’m working on a project that has to do with constructivism from a Hegelian perspective, but obviously, that, in some way shape or form, is going to involve absolute idealist constructivist. Developmental Learning in Art Human developmental theories can be found in education, society, and even in peace research: cognitive, developmental, social learning, and socio-cultural developmental theories all have contributed to the educational system that is present today in the United States of America. Researchers such as Darwin, Freud, Erickson, Piaget, Watson, Skinner, Kohlberg, Bandura, Vygostsky, Bowlby, Bronfenbrenner, Gilligan, among many other scientists have done extensive resea

How to Use Methodological Individualism Mises Daily by Jörg Guido Hülsmann Two months ago, on May 16, the great French economist Pascal Salin celebrated his 70th birthday. I first met Professor Salin in late 1997, in his office at the University of Paris-Dauphine. When I mentioned that I had been drawn to the Austrian School not least of all because of Mises's epistemology, he raised his eyebrows and put on a skeptical face. I stopped talking and h

Let’s talk about something interesting. I’ve been reading a lot of philosophy lately, including works of Epicurus, Epictetus, Aristotle, Aquinas , Nietzsche, Schopenhauer, Hayek and Rand, in addition to reference works about the major ideas of the past. I’ll get on certain ‘kicks’ here and there in my reading, and this happens to be it right now. Since it’s a slow day, I’ll just throw out some miscellany. — Here are a few fun paradoxes and con
