Endless oil

Except in Russia and Ukraine. What is to us a matter of scientific certainty is by no means accepted there. Many Russians and Ukrainians — no slouches in the hard sciences — have since the 1950s held that oil does not come exclusively, or even partly, from dinosaurs but is formed below the Earth’s 25-mile deep crust. This theory — first espoused in 1877 by Dmitri Mendeleev, who also developed the periodic table — was rejected by geologists of the day because he postulated that the Earth’s crust Russian research has shown that the Earth doesn’t need dinosaurs to produce oil Financial Post | Sep 12, 2009 Endless oil By Lawrence Solomon Do dead dinosaurs fuel our cars? Rebooting the Basics in Seymour

LMC at Seymour High School It is a pleasure to have the chance to address the faculty and staff of the Seymour Community Schools, just west of Green Bay, Wisconsin.  The village of Seymour was settled just prior to and during the American Civil War, and recognized in 1867, for some time considered the smallest town in the nation.  This is the first town where I have found such early reference to education. As soon as the settlers had built their houses, they turned to education, electing Russian research has shown that the Earth doesn’t need dinosaurs to produce oil By Lawrence Solomon D o dead dinosaurs fuel our cars? Aug Mendeleev Braves the Elements to View Eclipse

Like Space Camp But Quantized

A friend sent me a link to QuantumCamp : Have you ever wondered how the microscopic Universe works? QuantumCamp is a one week journey through this strange but beautiful world - seeing nothing less than how every atom in our universe is working! We begin with Dmitri Mendeleev's periodic table of the elements. We move from Albert Einstein's idea of quantization and end up seeing the hydrogen spectrum while contemplating the ideas of Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg. We witness the explosive ... two, full-fledged periodic tables. Working independently, Lothar Meyer and Dmitri Mendeleev both developed periodic tables. Organic Germanium

Organic germanium has been researched for years but only a few have come to find out the significant nutritional impact this single element could bring to mankind. A quick rundown of Germanium. Germanium is a chemical element with the symbol Ge and atomic number 32. Dmitri Mendeleev put together the periodic table in 1869. Except some elements were missing because they were unknown at that time. Germanium was one of those elements. Inorganic germanium is used in the electronics industry as Of all the sins committed against visualization on the Internet, the Periodic Table of Visualization Methods stands out as the most egregious. Its collection of actual visualization methods, structural diagrams, and feel-good business bullshit does not fit a structure that was devised to understand the world – and that is actually a very effective visualization in itself. Visualization Methods A good part of the left half of the diagram is comprised of actual visualization methods. There funny-pictures-cat-upsets-your-gravity.jpg Finally, the problem with quantum gravity is revealed. Robert Wright: Why the "New Atheists" are Right-Wing on Foreign Policy "It must strike progressive atheists as a stroke of bad luck that Christopher Hitchens, leading atheist spokesperson, happens to have EVER had the feeling something is missing? If so, you're in good company. Dmitri Mendeleev did in 1869 when he noticed four gaps in his periodic table. They turned out to be the undiscovered elements scandium, gallium, technetium and germanium. Paul Dirac did in 1929 when he looked deep into the quantum-mechanical equation he had formulated to describe the electron. Besides the electron, he saw something else that looked rather like it, but different. It was only in 1932, when the electron's ant

Periodic Brews

You gotta eat. And you gotta drink. And one place to do that in the Gallery Place/Chinatown area of Washington where most of the national meeting action is taking place is Regional Food & Drink Washington, known for short as R.F.D. Its beer list is legion, so much so that the managers felt compelled to channel the spirit of Dmitri Mendeleev–whose 19th century photographic portraits suggest he would have been quite capable of gulping down a keg of beer without assistance (or at least a heckuv

Philosophy in Philadelphia

As everyone else gears up for the ACS meeting , I’ve had the pleasure of spending the last couple of days at the International Society for the Philosophy of Chemistry 2009 Summer Symposium in Philadelphia, where I’ve been learning about metaphysics , reductionism , holism , structural realism , and–the buzzword of the week– mereology . CHF's main exhibit hall The meeting has been hosted by the Chemical Heritage Foundation . C&EN was last at the CHF a year ago , when the fouI did very well in school. My memory was pretty much photographic, and I could retain loads of mathematical formulas, geographical locations, historical dates, and chemical compounds. Now, quite a few years later, I come across an old notebook and wonder, did I really write this? I used to know all that? Obviously, I have conveniently forgotten a lot I learned at school to make space for other things. Now that I have a school-age child, I feel I need to brush up on these old subjects - or having
