Victory Day Special The Poisonous Myths of the Eastern Front

За нас за вас и за десант и за спецназ! The Red Army was the single greatest contributor to the defeat of Nazi Germany sixty-four years ago, a truly evil empire based on slavery and oppression, and responsible for the genocide of millions of Slav civilians, Jews, Soviet POW’s and Roma by gas, bullets and starvation. Yet ever since the first days of the Cold War, there has been a concerted campaign to whitewash the Wehrmacht of participation in war crimes and to rehabilitate the generals who paJoanna Blythman | The Guardian 13 September 2009 I’m standing in what remains of Taysir Sadia Yaseen’s olive grove, looking up at a 12ft-high wire fence. Where our sympathy lies

Over at the New York Times, Motherlode writer Lisa Belkin is in full defense mode of blogger Anita Tedaldi.  But the numbers don’t add up. From Lisa Belkin: Anita adopted D. when he was a little less than a year old. He was with her for about 18 months and was about two and a half when he left with Samantha. According to other blog posts by Tedaldi, the kid was four months old when he was adopted. His adoption was probably around April 2006. The disruption was some time after June 2008. I recently heard about the ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new civic center to be built on a site in the middle of small southern town.  All the city council members were there, the head of the Chamber of Commerce was there, lots of town’s people showed up, and the mayor gave a rousing speech before turning the first shovel of dirt.  Everyone at the event was excited: shaking hands, giving hugs, sharing toasts --- a wonderful event. I found myself thinking about the wedding day --- isn’t it a lo

Blessings and Counting Adoption Disruption

RAD is one cause. Reactive Attachment Disorder is probably the number one reason for disruption. In other cases it is something else. Hardly ever in my experience has disruption been for lack of want or love. ...An article in yesterday's New York Times Motherlode blog has been chewing at me since I read it. Go read it and come back. I’ve turned it over in my head from as many angles that have occurred to me, and can still not come to a conclusive decision about how I feel about this. These are just a few of things that have gone through my head about the story: Is it just me, or did Anita Tedaldi seem overly focused on her feelings about attachment, and less so about her son’s? I cannot imagine whaLiberals Revolt Over Public Option by Jonathan Martin & Carrie Budoff Brown - Politico.com/Common Dreams The White House's signal that it's willing to back off support for a public health insurance option has sent congressional liberals into full revolt, bluntly warning the administration that no legislation will pass without a government-run plan. Of Goodbyes

With a heavy heart, I watched as skyscrapers and massive traffic flyovers of KL blew past a weather-stained glass window. The low-gear roar of an eight-cylinder diesel engine jolted the bus forward as it swerved past traffic on a four-lane highway. The view didn’t stay the same. Concrete jungles slowly morphed into vast and neat rows of oil palm plantations. Watching endless rows of oil palms can be hypnotic I tell you – for I dozed off about 30 minutes into the bus ride to the KL LCCT. I neveI've been looking at the network Fall television schedule with very little excitement. With only a Dollhouse exception or two, it's crap. Even cheap fallbacks are diminishing--reality shows are waning, and producers may be running out of creative ways to watch fat people cry about missing an event on the prom-to-reunion continuum, and then what's left? Nothing, really. More Old Christine. My generation and those that followed may have been given television as a parental substitute, but when we

Is Poverty a Black Thing

The poor performance of African economies and economies where the people are of colour other than whites have prompted people to ask whether poverty is a black or a colour thing. This question about poverty being a black thing has gained credence in many circles. This question is also asked about Africa because it is the poorest continent on earth. It is a continent where for 30 years there has not been any concrete economic development compared to the rest of the world. Half a dozen shotguns in the Land Rover ready for the call to arms

Via Kim, this excellent summary of foul deeds at Westminster from Mr AlawsatIs England on the verge of revolution? To those who know this most peaceful of nations intimately, the question is bound to sound bizarre. Boasting attachment to the rule of law and democratic government, the English have not had a revolution since the 17th century. Nevertheless, these days it is hard to be in the company of Englishmen without hearing talk of the need, indeed the imminence, of revolution. However his is Guest post: Stephanie blogs at group blog, The Hand Mirror .
