Why Im Skeptical About Asset Allocation

Richard Bookstaber submits: I appeared last Friday on a the PBS program WealthTrack , where the topic was asset allocation, in particular, as host Consuelo Mack put it, how to build an all weather portfolio. I was the skeptic of the group. I don’t think there is some magic asset allocation that protects you from the buffetings of financial storms without it also trimming your sails during fair weather. Here is an encapsulation of my views from the program. Asset allocation and risk

HR Audit The Fed

By Karl Denninger, The Market Ticker HR 1207 is having a hearing tomorrow on auditing The Federal Reserve. There has been much made of whether a Fed Audit would “compromise” Fed independence. This is the wrong standard to apply. The correct standard is whether The Fed should, under the law, be truly independent in the first place.  There I look to The Constitution. Climate Change Corporate Disclosure Should Investors Care

Charles Morand On Monday morning, I received an e-copy of a new research note by BofA Merrill Lynch arguing that disclosure by publicly-listed companies on the issue of climate change was becoming increasingly "important". The note claimed: "e believe smart investors and companies will recognize the edge they can gain by understanding low carbon trends." I couldn't agree more with that statement. It was no coincidence that on that same day the Carbon Disclosure Project , aGary Gordon submits: It’s easier to tell where markets have been than to tell where they’re going. Similarly, it’s simpler to identify where institutional and individual investor money has been flowing than to identify where it will flow to in the future. In what other investing endeavor do we expect to have the best of all possible ...For quite some time now financial advisers of all stripes have been in search of the elusive “all-weather portfolio.”  That is, an asset allocation that serves to protect investors in bad times and performs well in good times .  Does an all-weather portfolio really exist? Prior to the economic crisis many would have answered in the affirmative and would have pointed to the large university endowment funds as examples of investors who had achieved this goal.  HoweveThe conventional wisdom is that ETFs and other index-tracking vehicles are designed for beta and that active managers pursue alpha . But what does this actually tell us? Do our well-used Greek letters help us make sense of the investment landscape, or do they actually hamper us in managing money? As James Montier, formerly of Societe Generale’s asset allocation team, now with Boston-based fund manager GMO, pointed out in an article published in 2
