Escaping Orientalism in cultural psychology

In a recent article in American Psychologist , Adam Cohen suggests that a number of fields in psychology have taken up the study of culture, but the results, although interesting, have been limited by what sorts of ‘culture’ have been investigated. Visibility Affordance Feedback

This semester I attended “User Interface Design”, a class that encouraged us to think critically about the ways in which people interact with systems. While the course work naturally focused on software interfaces, the principles of good UI design are universal. Whether you’re creating a website, a toaster, a lamp or a door handle, intuitive design relies on understanding human psychology. In my ongoing quest to contextualize everything I learn in terms of video games, I’d like to explore how This posts contains the last content of what will become the “Past Experience” section of Chapter 2 of my thesis . Previous content for this section is already on the blog, including: History of technology-mediated learning , Paradigms of e-learning , e-learning usage – quality , and e-learning usage – quantity . The aim of this post is to draw some lessons from the past. It won’t be exhaustive, I’m sure there are many other lessons to draw, I’d be interested in hearing them if

Triune Ethics On Neurobiology and Multiple Moralities

Editor’s Note : The following essay by Darcia Narvaez is based on her paper Triune Ethics: The Neurobiological Roots of Our Multiple Moral Personalities , which was part of the Notre Dame Symposium on Character and Moral Personality . You can obtain all the conference papers online , including Daniel Cervone, Ross Thompson, Dan McAdams, and others. Darcia Narvaez is associate professor of psychology at Notre Dame and executive director of the Notre Dame Collaboration for Ethical EducatThe Visual Lens combines ideas from product semantics , semiotics , ecological psychology and Gestalt psychology about how users perceive patterns and meanings as they interact with the systems around them. These techniques are often applied by interaction designers without necessarily considering how they can influence user behaviour. Foundations of Affordances

Last week I was honored to give a talk at the Front End Design Conference titled “Affordances in Modern Web Design.” In preparation for the talk, I did plenty of research; and while the slides are available for download , I’d like to provide readers with a written overview of the history and application of affordances in web design. The history of Affordances One of the most influential American psychologists, J. J. Gibson coined the word “affordanceWhen you’re knee-deep in wireframes or CSS it’s all too easy to end up in a bubble of IxD books and blogs. One option is to take inspiration from vintage art and nature , but what about what other smart people are doing in their respective disciplines? In other words, why not steal from them? Here are my picks of a few other fields with ideas worth appropriating, or at least glancing at. Social Sciences Easy pickings: Genevieve Bell , Michael Wensch If yRob Tannen , chair of the Human Factors Professional Interest Section of the Industrial Designers Society of America, has published two thoughtful posts – i.e. recommended reading – on physical interaction: Physical interaction & the future of user interface design We are on the cusp of a significant trend in product design and design methodology, where the longstanding divide between physical and cognitive modes of interaction will disappear. “But there are alternative perspectives o

A Failure to Communicate

Bill Lindeke occasionally posts " Signs of the Times " he encounters while documenting city life. Here's one he found on a new bus, instructing riders how to open the doors. It took me back to my days of teaching information design and Don Norman's The Psychology of Everyday Things , where he introduced the term "affordance" to describe physical features that "afford" a user control over a function — in this case, opening a door. Now he says , I A real strength of your new book, Children and the Internet: Great Expectations and Challenging Realities , is that it combines ethnographic and statistical, qualitative and quantitative approaches. What does each add to our understanding of the issues? Why are they so seldom brought together in the same analysis? I'm glad you think this is a strength, as it's demanding to do, which may be why many don't do it. The simple answer is that I am committed to the view that qualitative work helps
