I’ve been in Juneau for a few days taking part in the American Association for the Advancement of Science Arctic Science Conference . I was privileged to have the opportunity to run a distance education segment in partnership with my colleague Carol Gering … which morphed for natural reasons into a session on science education in general. What follows are thoughts based on my presentation and having heard from a variety of scientists, eduthose who teach online leave the familiarity of the face-to-face classroom for the uncharted terrain of the online environment, whose constraints and affordances often lead to very different practices. The trans-classroom teacher who ...

In my view, Braudel’s approach to history provides a model example of what an object-oriented analysis might look like. Braudel does not tell the story of the emergence of capitalism from the standpoint of ideas, political conflicts, nations, or “great men”, but rather from the standpoint of what he calls “material civilization”. Material history consists of those const

In email today an old friend of mine asks, Currently I’m having a bit of a spat with other graphic designers over in another pocket of the Internet. My question is: can design be understood to have an ontology, can there be an ‘ontology of design’? Does this make philosophical sense? I’m wondering if the assemblage that is my discourse, field, discipline, community, etc. can be understood as a thing? Tan Lin from an email interview with Chris Alexander, Kristen Gallagher, and Gordon Tapper in Galatea Resurrects I think the idea of what is "neutral" in a reading experience, and how to make what is "neutral" in a reading visible is important to Heath , which in some ways outsources the "labor/work" of the reader to other parties, who appear to be "looking on," maybe commenting, maybe reading, maybe writing, mPaul has his interview with Graham Harman up over at anotherheidegger blog. It’s filled with lots of interesting tidbits about his writing process, his influences, and his experiences navigating academia. There is also more discussion about the possibility of a philosophy video game. A while back Bogost asked me what, exactly, I would be interested in with respect to such a game. Apropos of recent discussions of constraints and affordances, I’m not even sure such a game would be possibleWhat Communication Experts Need To Know - Ideas, Tools and Resources to Communicate More Effectively With New Media Technologies

The Apostle Paul once wrote that he could see things 'through a glass, darkly'. He was trying, I feel, to capture what it felt like to see things, but without complete clarity. And I know what he meant, because this week, when I should have been over in Gdansk to speak at the European Distance and E-learning Network Conference, I am sat at home recuperating after keyhole surgery. Speaking of Lessig , two interesting cases emerged this week that help illustrate Lessig’s position that, when thinking about the architecture of cyberspace, “code is law.” In Code , Lessig argues that all of the rules, tendencies, affordances, and constraints of/in cyberspace are the result of human decisions, actions, and, ultimately, code. What we can and cannot do there is governed by the underlying code of all of the programs and protocols that make up the Internet, which can, alternatAbstract Most research on text-based synchronous computer-mediated communication in language learning has used output logs as the sole data source. I first started work as a technician in media and technology back in 1976 when things were a lot less sophisticated than they are now. And for a country like the Netherlands, it's far more likely to work. But the USA has a much bigger population and 50 states, each of which would have different laws. I'd be OK with a system that's OK for everyone. But when a country as large as the US tries to socialize health care, what happens is crappy health care for most, decent (but 10 times as expensive) health care for a very very small minority.
